In Wyoming, utility companies must provide at least seven days' notice to residential customers before shutting off service for nonpayment. This notice can be delivered via mail, email, text, phone, or a door hanger. Utilities cannot disconnect service when the temperature is expected to be less than 32 degrees during cold weather periods (November 1 to April 30) if it's determined that shutting off service could be a serious health risk, and they must attempt to contact the customer by phone or in person.
Before disconnection
Before disconnection
- Receive a notice: A utility company must give a minimum of seven days' written notice to residential customers before shutting off service for nonpayment.
- Make payment: You can prevent shutoff by paying the bill in full before the disconnection date.
- Set up a payment plan: You can also avoid shutoff by making a payment agreement with the utility company that covers the outstanding amount.
- Avoid extreme weather: Service cannot be shut off during the cold weather period (November 1 through April 30) if the utility determines it poses a serious health risk, and the utility must attempt to contact you directly before disconnection.
- Medical certificate: You can prevent disconnection by providing the utility with a certificate from a doctor or public health official stating that a serious illness or medical emergency exists or could be created for a permanent household member if service is shut off.
- Pay the bill: The easiest way to prevent shutoff is to pay the full amount owed.
- Contact the utility: If you cannot pay the full amount, contact the utility to ask about a payment plan.
- Get medical documentation: If a medical issue is the problem, provide the utility with the required certificate to prevent disconnection.
